There are numerous services on the internet that provide discussions about specific stocks. The intention of these boards is to provide a forum where people can exchange information and rumors about a company in order to educate themselves.
Unfortunately, these rooms are completely useless to anyone interested in trading the stock. Each poster has a vested interest in the stock going up or down, and their bias is reflected in their posts. In fact, many people barrage the forums with positive or negative comments hoping those comments will encourage people to either buy or sell the stock.
Most professional traders agree that stock tips in general do not assist a professional investor because they don't tell him what he needs to know about the stock after he's bought it. Knowing when to buy a stock does not tell you when to sell it, or in what quantity to buy the shares in the first place. They prefer to use the "Trend Following" method. That is, buying a stock when it is rising and selling it when it is falling. The rational is to follow overall market movement.
So when you meet someone in a gym and they give you a "hot stock tip," beware both their motive and the utility of tips in general. Do your own research and don't listen to the people that try to pick stocks for you. You wouldn't let someone else tell you what car to buy, so it doesn't make sense to let them pick your stocks.
